This is Sterling.. he's still trying to find the fish market w/o his companion Puddles. She has gone to live in California where the sun shines warmly on her.. and Sterling is stuck here in cold Michigan.. he is still looking for a home. Thanks Carol for giving Sterling a home .
This is Roxy. She has been dancing around all morning and getting in the way of all the outgoing boxes... she is still waiting for a good home. Roxy will be dancing her way to a warmer climate! Thanks Jimsey.

Now that the Holiday Season is here, I have been hard at work until the wee hours of the morning, with no end in sight. I have been trying to come up with an approximate date for our annual Holiday Update, and will post here as soon as I can narrow it down... I'm thinking' around the 11th or 13th. Notices will be sent to you, if you are on our email list. If not, email me, and we willl add you to the list. This is how the studio looks today.. bits and pieces of this at that everywhere.. It's a rather organized chaos tho... and just having all this Christmas hanging around me gets me more and more excited..
Some luck fella will surely end up with this little vintage tin train I found on my way back from West Virginia.. and how about the sweet little Atlantic City purse.. what a lucky little ted,who gets that, to be sure..

At last, I can say that it's looking pretty stellar in my studio.. I took a bit of a break to unpack a few Holiday decorations, you know to get me in the spirit.. so much to do. It's a brighter and cheerier space, and for that, I am pleased. This is a snippet from above my work space. It really makes me smile when I look up and see all their little faces.

Call me a bit crazy as this November rolls around, but I know it's coming... the darkness that seems to envelope my whole world, and leave me a tad bit hoo hoo. So this year, I've taken a new stance... meet it head on and merrily count the days down until there is more sunshine and light.. thus I am redoing my studio.
First of all, let me say...never try to spraypaint your countertop.. Yes, I know, it sounds like a quick solution.. just change it from dark and gloomy, to white.. did that... oh my, it was soooo NOT a quick fix.. do not believe those spray cans that tell you.. "will cover any surface.." I should also tell you that my good natured parter, Tom, also told me "no, no".... so now he has ever so patiently ripped off the old, and installed a new white counter, new and brighter lighting, and with that pretty fabric (shown above), I have made some nice under the counter curtains,and how nice is that checkerboard floor. It's looking much brighter in my world today! More on this tomorrow.

Hi Everyone,
Happy Fall! As I write this message, the fog is lifting (both inside and out) and the early morning sun is lighting up the reds, yellows and oranges of the nearby maples. Ah, fall... the pumpkins and gourds showing their festive colors make me a bit giddy, as do the asters and mums. Who cannot love this time of year as the season winds down and we prepare for the trick or treaters and the bobbing of apples...

We wish you could all stop by for some mulled cider and ghoulish cookies to see what we have created for this fall season. I smile as I prepare the house for this special time of year, bringing out my Halloween collection that has been limited to a section in our dining room.. How does it happen that this collection has wandered into the kitchen and dining room this year?

I can hardly believe that October is here and Ghoultide is over...
I couldnt be in 2 places at once, and realized at a late date that I had double booked myself for Ghoultide weekend. My God daughter's wedding in Iowa took presidence, of course, so there are no photos of Ghoultide this year. My stand-in, Connie did a great job at the show, but I felt sad that I missed such an outstanding affair... Note to self... to take it a little slower these days... breathing deeply, drinking up the beauty that is all around me and enjoying what each day may bring..
That said, I have cancelled Country Living Atlanta appearence, and concentrating on The Halloween Web Update.. to be announced soooon...
These sunny warm October days are breathing new life into my weary bones... ahhh, if the sunshine, blue skies and warm weather could only last.

For those of you that arent aware of this show(How can that possibly be), you must check out the fantastic lineup of very talented artists that will be in Michigan next weekend for the Ghoultide Gathering Show. These little fellas I conjured up whilst traveling on those long trips back and forth to Minneapolis.. Something nice about needle felting...very portable. They make me smile...

Yesterday got the best of me. It ways almost too hot to think. I finally decided that the only way to cool off way to visit our local county park. Only 3 miles away, and I havent been there since they installed a small water park.. a number of years ago.. Ok, it wasnt Lake Michigan, or the Atlantic, but it did the trick. The smell of hot dogs and suntan lotion was just like I had remembered it.. ahhhh, summer.. hoping that there will be a break in the weather soon tho..

It's just toooo hot, and with no rain for the month of July, things are looking parched..

I love having the luxuary of mother nature on my side at this time of year.. I have this huge bin of antique childrens clothes that I hold all year waiting for the perfect time to remove spots, that are impossible to get out any other way. I've purchased some remarkable vintage clothing for bears that were stained so badly that I would take pity on them, and add them to my bin. Yes, it's true, I do have this vintage clothing problem, but somebody loved them enough to get the stains on them, and I.. yes, love them enough to give them a second chance, by taking the stains out and giving them a new life on a bear..
The sun will bleach out some stains, but the real magic is the "dew" You have to know when there will be a heavy dew at nite, followed by a sunny day.. It wont work if the next day isnt sunny.. My mother in law passed this on to me years ago, and I laughed when she told me... BUT, after trying it, I became a believer..
So here's how it goes...

hand wash your garmet

lay it out in the evening after the sun goes down..It has to be wet. remember, there MUST be a heavy dew, maybe not when you lay it out, but later on that nite ... like after a good rain, or when there's moisture in the grass(after you water).. ANd also remember, the next day has to be scheduled sunshine...

When the sun hits the damp dewy clothes, voila....

I leave them lay for the rest of the day (unless it's dark colors)

These clothes were all so badly stained..and now they just perfect.. thank you mother nature...

It is true, we do not live on a lake, or even a small pond, but we do have fields in which a good dog can roam to find his own ways to beat the heat on a warm day in July..I just turned my back for a brief moment, and voila.. a very proud and happy green dog... I'm not certain which is worse.. eating deer condiments, or rolling in them... hmmm..

Living in the country with well water always poses a slight problem.. our water is soooo cold... so after much fangling, I hooked up the hose thru the laundyroom. Not a bad hot summer day project... just one that I hadnt planned on.

Yikes, not in my ears...

Last nite we visited a local fireworks display. Yes, these certainly are amateur photos, but it was very fun and pretty buggy... nothing better on a hot summer nite. I love everything about the 4th Of July.. the patriotism, the red, white and blue, the freedoms that we should never take for granted, and of course the food.. Have a great day everyone....

My project from the Cape

We had such a busy agenda whilst at the Cape. I just now finished my "whale clutch"

This was my first attempt to make a vinyl tote.. I took photographs and re sized them for this bag, and lined it with another paper.. The papers are sandwiched between the vinyl..The sides and bottom have a nice little gusset in them.. Voila my own personalized tote! How cute is the little sailor fella peeking over the bag.... he was a very generous gift from Jody Battaglia...I love him Jody, thanks so much...

Here's the flip side of the tote....

but of course, my 2nd attempt became more elaborate..this one has gussets too with more Soapine kids and whales on the sides and bottom gussets. These are old trade card ads that I find so charming... very appropriate for Cape Cod, dont you think. I hope that Jody will finish hers soon, as she's going to Japan and her collectors will want to see her sporting her new clutch with her amazing characters on it.

Rosanne made a wallet (smart gal), as she did come a few days later in our vacation.. As for slacker Leslie, well, we're still waiting to see what she finishes.... but then, she was pretty busy making us all kinds of muffins... thanks so much Leslie... I had such a great time..

Inside is lined with the sweetest paper with scroll and birds.. I'm quite pleased with my project..

My trip to Cape Cod was beyond fantastic, and I am still processing it all...but an hour after returning home, I jumped back into the car for yet another trip to a different airport about an hour away to pick up our daughter Kindra and our 4 year old granddaughter for a very exciting visit..... That said, there's just so much I would like to share...BUT... as my last post was about this amazing Lemon Lasagna, ( which we ate it in Cape Cod ), and then again for Kindra's visit, I thought that I should share that Oscar was also just as fond of it as we all were... in fact, these are photos of the very sleepy fella just after consuming 3/4 of it off the kitchen table... I only wish that I had captured him standing on the table eating it.... not a trustworthy guy when it comes to food... but come on, off the table? So much for the Dog Whisper'er in me.

It's been awhile since I've posted about food, and I've tried this twice now and it's really a big hit here... What makes it so special are the lemons on the top.. You eat them along with the lasagna, and it couldn't be better... I didnt take this photo, but mine looked just like this...

Sausage, chard (or spinach), and lemon Lasagna ( A Martha receipe )
3 tbsp butter
1/4 cup flour
3 cups whole milk
1 cup grated parmesan
course ground pepper, and salt
5 cups chopped swiss chard or( I used spinach)
1 lb sweet Italian sausage, casings removed
1 lemon sliced very thin
6 no boil lasagna noodles(or you can use the reg ones, and cook them first)

1. Melt butter in saucepan. Stir in flour, cook 2 mins, wisk in milk, bring to a boil, stirring. Reduce heat, simmer 1 min. Remove from heat, whisk in 3/4 c parmesan, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp pepper and the greens.
2Preheat oven to 350. Cook sausage in skillet breaking up into small pieces, until browned and thoroughly cooked.
3. Cover lemon slices with cold water by 3 inches in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 7 mins. That's what makes them special..Transfer to a paper towel lined plate.
4. Spread 1/4 cup sauce in an 8-inch square non-reactive baking dish. Top with 2 noodles, half the sausage, and 1 cup sauce. Repeat. Top with a layer of 2 noodles, remaining sauce and the lemons. Bake covered with parchment-lined foil for 27 mins.
5. Remove from oven. Heat broiler. Uncover lasagna, top with remaining cheese. Broil until bubbling, 2-3 mins. yum......

It's that time of year when the yard is filled with the amazing fragrance of peonies and wild phlox. I love their aroma, and smile knowing that these peonies have continued to bloom although their original home has been gone for 15 years. In making room for development, this lovely old home was torn down, and memories lost forever... but not the peonies and other spring flowers. My friend and I dug alot of flowers out of there before the bull dozer came and leveled the grounds. It was two days well spent..... If anyone would like some of these blush peonies, I will be digging them in the fall, and would gladly share...

It's that time of year again.. ahhhh, summer. For a long while, getting together in Cape Cod

seemed like so far off. But now, the time is here, and I am packing the last of my project( parts and pieces ), and off I go... Leslie McCabe has graciously extented another invite at her new abode, and I am so excited to finally see this new place. With Jody, Diana, and Roseanne, finally together in the same house, there's bound to be a grand time. There will be fun new projects, lots of laughter, lobster rolls and a daily dose of wine to mellow us all ....

So bring on the heat, I am now ready for it...

The bluebirds are busy raising their young, after a marauder tore down their first nesting box. There's always so much to do here in the spring, before the heat of the season sets in and plants don't like to move around anymore than I. These are some of my favorite spots to sit in the early morning, and it is here that I make more mental lists of things that need moving, or little rooms that need creating.. This year, we are taking on a huge project... the fence... I have been wanting it grey for so long, and now that we actually need to replace some boards, it's a perfect excuse... Any one who would like to grab a brush and help... it will be a full spring, summer and fall project, and Oscar hasn't volunteered.

Ok, so it's been a not so grand week here, but in the scheme of things, this was pretty minor. You have to realize, that out of 69 days here in Michigan, 49 have been with measurable precipitation ( 5 inches fell yesterday), so when I grabbed my sweatshirt to take ol' Oscar Boy out for a walk between the raindrops, today, this is what I found... note to self... "never leave liver treats in your pocket"....

This guy is just the sweetest little bird... White Crowned Sparrow. I think that they are just passing thru on their way back up to Alaska. We've had 4 of them visiting us for a few weeks now... soon they'll be gone...

He sits on the rail waiting for breakfast to be served. These birds wont go to the feeders.. They are quite shy.

We have 2 pair of Baltimore Orieos this year. These fellas just sing their little hearts out.. Yes, they really are that orange..

The Orieo and Downy Woodpecker will share ..

This guy is a real treat... Rose Breasted Grossbeak. The pair have been visiting all week.. The female is not a very showy little girl, but what she lacks in beauty.. well.... who knows...
All this bird activity has me inspired to pick up the needle felting. The weather has finally turned today, and I will be dyeing some roving for sure.

It's been a very busy week here, but I am tagging the last of the tinies, and then will sit in the sun for a moment, and make another list. I'm very good at making lists, and it keeps me a bit more focused when I have so much to get ready before leaving for the BIG convention. A trip to the farmers market never fails to bring smiles to all who enter this world of lushness. It's been a cold and blustery week here in Michigan, and today was no exception, but here at the market, dressed in warm coats, hats, scarves and gloves, it made me think.... well, ok, it made me say to myself... May Day.... really???? When I was young, May Day was always a special kinda day. We would make little paper lace cones, fill them with flowers, and hang them on special folks front doors, ring the doorbell, and run like crazy...yes, really, this actually did happen way back then... so here I am, ringing your doorbell, wishing you all a Happy May Day.

As an avid gardener, I find it difficult to concentrate on other things in the spring, but I have been working on some new little guys all this week , in preparation for the Philadelphia Doll and Teddy Bear Show that's just around the corner. I'm getting excited about seeing some old colleagues again, the most important one being Jody Battaglia. It will be like a big party , with so many talented doll and teddy bear artists coming in from all over the country. If you havent put it on your calendar yet, check it out, and by all means, mark it down... May 12-14th. There will be lots to do during those 3 days, but if you can only make it to the show, it's Saturday May 14th...

In less than 12 hours, my favorite spring tree has really burst with enthusiasm (see April Showers blog below).... and as you can see, there really ARE pussy willows on it! The blossoms are daffodil size, and last for along time. It's the perfect tree...

How amazing our trip was to one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Words cannot describe the beauty that was everywhere... so why the photos of feet you ask.... well, I found them so fascinatingly lovely, AND was wishing for feet that could be as resilient as the Roman sculptures from centuries ago. The streets which were paved thousands of years ago still remain, and are charming but oh so wonky... we are still recovering... we walked for 7-8 hours everyday trying to see as much of this great place and all it's charm... it was such an opportunity..seeing family( thank you Jen, Jay and Claude) while touring some some of the oldest ruins and architecture in the world.....more later..

Ok, so I cannot tell you how exciting this was.... and right in our very yard... not one but a pair of these rather prehistoric looking guys. They are huge!!! They are bigger than a crow, and in my book, that's Big. This is the real deal... the woody woodpecker guy, also known as pileated woodpecker... it was a great day!

While in California for "A Gathering of Friends" ( March 30th blog), we were invited to share a special evening with our good friend and fellow artist, Debbee Thibault. It's unusual for us to have the time to luxuriate in the company of such a special person, and the time seemed to fly by. Her work is as impressive as are her collections, and even though a few weeks have gone by, I can still feel the magic of a very special kinship, from a very kind and generous host. This weekend was so special. Seeing old friends, and making new... That's what makes what we do so great.... "A Gathering of Friends" in Orange County California on Saturday was certainly a

culmination of efforts from so many people.... It was a huge sucess, and we are already making plans for 2012.... a special thanks to Dana, Jack, Nancy, Janis, Carolyn, Debbee, Jamie, Lori, and Linda. We could not have done this show without your help.... and of course, a huge thank-you to all who came.... what an extraordinary event.

As I was sitting in my studio yesterday, I realized that there have been times in March when the temperatures have soared and suddenly the daffodils and tiny snowdrops would be poking there heads up and showing us that, yes, spring was just around the corner.....not so this year. So in response to this rather drab time of year in Michigan, I am creating my own colorful bouquets.
It is quite the juggling act that I have going on here...getting ready for a Spring Web Update (more on that in a few days),as well as preparing for "A Gathering of Friends". it certainly makes the days fly by... and dont forget..... daylight savings time starts this weekend....yeh.......

This morning was a magical one with the sun shining on all these ice crystals that had formed on everything.. it was hard to imagine ....millions of crystals everywhere... What is it about this time of year that makes me crazy for anything that comes out of an egg....I've been working on these fellas for the past week, and am so pleased with them... After all, it IS almost St Patty's Day, and my name is Murphy.. I just love the felt circles in their legs, even tho they are alot of work, they make me smile. If this is March, can spring be far away.... It's feeling very spring-like here in the studio this morning. After what seems like a very long winter, there's nothing like a little color to bring you out of the winter doldrums... We are getting things well underway for March 26th in sunny California... cant wait!!! These Lippizzaner stallions came to a small venue, and it was truely a great nite. The dressage was amazing. Who who possibly imagine that you could train such noble animals to fly through the air or to be so focused. .. Truely this is where horse and rider became one. If you ever have a chance to these animals, dont pass it up...

I am sooo excited about this venture... we are calling it "A Gathering of Friends".. Four fellow artists are getting together for a showing of our works. Our good friend Dana Miller Wade and her husband Jack have been so kind as to offer their wonderful Mill Creek Restaurant in Corona California as a venue for our gathering... It's still in it's early stages, but mark your calendar... Paul Gordon ,Jody Battaglia , Leslie McCabe , and myself will be there, Saturday March 26th, from 10-2pm. This is gonna be a splendid happy affair.. it will be so great seeing all our old friends on the west coast... stay tuned for more details.....

It's that special day today. We are back home from a great visit with the family. It was frreeezing cold in Minneapolis, but the love was certainly warm and delicious. Sending you all heartfelt wishes, from our home to yours....

snowball quilt for Claude

This is the quilt that I DID finish for Claude just days before Christmas. I wasnt sure that it would be completed in time, but it turned out pretty cool I think. It's called a snowball quilt, and for those of you who can visualize quilt parts in pieces...well, more power to you. I have the hang of it now, and might attempt another, now that I understand how the pieces work together.
I do rather like the randomness of it all. I am an electic sew'er, and wanted it to be just lighter centers, but it might be interesting to have all the centers similar. There are just 2 size pieces that you work with, and it's a great way to use up those little tidbits of fabric that you just cant bear to part with. The large square is 4 1/4" and the small square is 1 3/4". You will need four small sqaure for each larg square. I have a friend who does machine quilting if you are looking for someone, I can email you her information. I can highly recommend her. Well, now's the time to get out all your fav fabrics... happy sewing...

Oscar is clearly not thrilled with all the whitestuff, and when the temps dipped down into the single digits, he just was freezing, so I made him this little coat. It's made of an old recycled lambswool sweater, and I think he really likes it. Because Oscar has been under so much stress, I think his coat is in a rather sparce state. What we do for our furry friends...especially our adopted ones.

This blog is just the best. For those of you not familar with Jody Battaglia (is there anyone out there who DOESN"T know her her work?) it is so full of fun and whimsey. Jody finds her inspiration from vintage children's books from the 1950's, and her work is the best.

Jody is getting ready for the big Teddy Bear Show in London. We've had such fun going there together and meeting up with our good friend Marijan from Holland. This year the two of them will be forging ahead without me. I'm green with envy, but am not able this year....saving our coins for a trip to Rome to see the fam... Jen, Jay and Baby Claude.
